Last month we mentioned that the wick had been lite on the money bomb…well, it exploded
$768,018,626.77 was spent by Super PACs in September. For context,$429,199,635.06 was spent in independent expenditures in September of 2022. That’s a 44% increase in two years.
Hot Takes:
$107,790,296.25 was spent on the Ohio Senate race. For perspective, the most that was spent on a senate race in September of ‘22 was $40,463,388.59 in the Fetterman v. Oz matchup in PA.
$59,787,795.96 was spend by Republican aligned Senate Leadership fund in September of ‘24, but they spent $89,073,384.38 in September of ‘22. Delta of -$29,285,588.42.
$82,318,490.14 was spent by WinSenate (AKA Dem aligned Senate Majority Pac) in September of ‘24, Senate Majority PAC spent $34,120,891.07 in September of ‘22. Delta of $48,197,599.07
$29,886,452.33 was spent by Republican aligned Congressional Leadership Fund in September of ‘24. $68,613,446.02 was spent by CLF in September of ‘22. Delta of -$38,726,993.69
$23,902,433.73 was spent by Dem aligned House Majority Pac in September of ‘24, $21,830,276.87 was spent by HMP in September of ‘22. $2,072,156.98
How to interpret this:
Spending is down cycle over cycle in September for the two main Republican aligned groups while spending is up cycle over cycle for the two main Dem aligned groups. This creates a spending delta of change of $118,282,338.16 cycle over cycle for September in favor of the Congressional Democrats. Lots of reasons this could be happening but this delta is a good way to see how much the money game has changed since 2022. This could change over the next month but this is the hard data on the state of play at this point in the cycle.
As we covered in last months newsletter, the 2022 cycle saw $1.3B in IE from Labor Day to Election Day, and there was no presidential. October of 2022 saw $751,497,972.87 in IE spending and we’ve seen more than that in September of ‘24. Everything is shaping up for October to be a $1B month, and maybe $2B between Labor Day and Election Day.
